The prisoner had spoken in Polish. 'Slovak', answered Vlado. ' Vlado explained, and the Pole translated. When he'd finished, the doctor hugged Vlado that he could feel the man's heart beating. 'You're sick. You must stay in bed. ' They took him to the hospital hut, and in the evening the doctor came. While making a great show of examining Vlado's legs, he passed the boy some food. ' He came again next morning, and every day, doing everything to make sure Vlado stayed in the hospital as long as possible.

It was a terrible disappointment to be left out of the coming action, guarding the boats with two others, but one thing he had learned was that orders are orders. They didn't have long to wait before they heard a few dull, faint shots, sounds like distant shouting, then the sound of feet coming back at the run. The partisans jumped into the boats. ' and stuffed a wad of paper into his pocket. By the time the last boatload of partisans had been ferried back across the Váh, things were livening up on the enemy bank.

Even the guards were surprised that he was here, in a terrible camp like this. Several inmates asked him how old he was. He'd answer by counting his age with spread fingers: fourteen. They tattooed a number on his forearm: Gefangenennummer 306084. They didn't even have a prison uniform his size, but left him in the worn trousers and shirt he had come in, and the jacket worn through at the elbows, and the split shoes. He was still wearing these clothes when winter came, and they started dividing the Sklabiña menfolk.
