W h e n Charles died in 1461, a despotic monarchy had been restored to France. His son, Louis X I , loved power and was an unscrupulous despot. His father had created the means for him to be one, although Louis had, for years, done nothing but oppose his father and wish for his early death. Louis was treacherous, and known as the Spider; but he was a successful king, original and gifted, and far more intelligent than his contemporaries. As Dauphin, he had been helped by Philip o f Burgundy. Immediately he became King, he made it clear that he regarded Burgundy only as an enemy.

His eldest daughter, Anne, was therefore the heiress to the D u c h y , and suitors were not lacking. T h e y included Louis o f Orléans and the Emperor Maximilian. T h e latter, indeed, became betrothed to her, but when a French force invaded, the betrothal was repudiated, and A n n e was quickly married off to Charles—a triumph for the methods o f Louis X I , as practised by his daughter. Charles, b y this dynastic marriage, was n o w K i n g o f all France, and he seized the opportunity to b e c o m e ruler as well (1491).
