By late childhood he had already developed a more than casual interest: ‘‘I would make lists of songs that I knew the titles of or little bits and pieces of. ’’ 19 The awakening of a serious interest in secular songs came through listening to recordings on his grandfather Woody’s wind-up phonograph. Bobby recalls songs by Ernest Stoneman and Uncle Dave Macon and, especially, the Carter Family.
