People often do not wish to understand what they adjudge as bad, and if a student is tacitly committed to misunderstanding something, odds are that he or she will succeed. More often than not, students enter the issue of sexual difference more equipped with judgments than with reasoned, communicable understanding. My first task, then, is to free up the faculty of understanding until students can represent others’ views on their own terms, in a way that those others would recognize.
