1 Introduction — Evolution from 2G to 3G Mobile telephones have been a tremendous success story. Through open interfaces and wholesale agreements, UMTS will make it much easier for third parties to package the basic network capabilities and connect their own platforms. There will therefore be much more competition in the market-place and the user will be faced with much more choice. The basic features of UMTS that will enable this competitive market are highspeed data access, efficient multimedia handling, and standardised interfaces to allow third parties to create their own products. In the future, UMTS will be more closely aligned with the Internet by using IP technology and users will therefore benefit from even more products that can be delivered to users by both fixed and mobile access in a seamless way.
