The attempt to transcend this world completely by means of art is bound to fail. The antidote to this attitude is Leopold Bloom. Bloom's attitude to art is that of the literal-minded alchemists; he, like they, uses the most mundane substances for his art and hopes to receive financial reward for his efforts. He wants to write a completely realistic piece, one based on Molly's comments while dressing. After reading Matcham's Masterstroke and defecating in a most satisfactory manner, Bloom's thoughts turn to his own literary ambitions, and he thinks: Time I used to try jotting down on my cuff what she said dressing.
