18 Anticipating the start of Operation Albion, larger numbers of German aircraft conducted hit-and-run reconnaissance and bomb runs against various island positions held by the Russians. During one of these attacks on October 10, de Seversky intercepted a squadron of enemy planes. Another lengthy air battle ensued resulting in the squadron leader adding two more victories, one bomber and one pursuit plane, to his tally of downed German machines. It proved to be one of the last triumphs of Russian arms in the war and reconfirmed the pilot’s status as a major war hero with the largest number of confirmed kills of any naval aviator.

It built the “M” series of flying boats (“M” for morskoi, or naval) conceived by Dimitrii Pavlovich Grigorovich. De Seversky worked with Grigorovich on what turned out to be the first Russian-designed naval aircraft to go into major production during the war, the M-9.
