As part of this plan, you must have a working understanding of the circuit you are troubleshooting. Take the time to review schematics, operating instructions, or other pertinent information if you are not certain how the circuit should operate. It may turn out that the failure was that of the operator, not the circuit! A schematic with proper voltages or waveforms marked at various test points is particularly useful for troubleshooting. Logical thinking is the most important tool of troubleshooting but rarely can solve the problem by itself.

This line is called the load line for the circuit and describes the driving circuit (in this case, the Thevenin circuit), not the load itself. Since the load line is a straight line, the first two calculated conditions (a short and an open load) are all that are needed to establish it. Passive transducers, such as strain gages, require a separate source of electrical power (called excitation) to perform their job.
